mostly an application has feature to change profile picture that commonly user can upload their picture directly to application. WordPress has that feature, but instead of user need to upload their picture to our application that requires user to be registered first in our application. WordPress is integrated with gravatar.
gravatar is a platform that allow user to manage their pictures in centralize place. gravatar is maintained by wordpress.com, so by default application built on top wordpress is already integrated.
We can create account in gravatar and upload our image to it. And then, wordpress can automaticly show our avatar based on our email that we use in wordpress and gravatar.
What are the benefits?
- we don’t need register to an application first, let’s say we want leave a comment in a post. If the blog is integrated with gravatar our avatar can be automatic showed based on our email that registered in gravatar.
- we just need change our profile in gravatar that will be change our avatar in all application that integrated with gravatar.
we can configure in our website to show user profile or not in the section : settings > discussion > avatars
